- Ballantyne Blooms & Bees -

We are a family run farm business that sells fresh cut flowers and local honey. In the spring, we also offer a variety of dahlia tubers, seeds and nucs for sale.  All of our products are hand cultivated in our own home garden.  We are constantly monitoring for any signs of weakness or disease to make sure that you get only our very best! Our family is dedicated to bringing the beauty and taste of nature into your homes and gardens.

Anna

Anna's story:

My love for flowers began before I was even born.  My parents farmed dahlias in Latvia many years ago.  They used to pack buckets of beautiful blooms into their car and drive hours away to sell them at the market in Leningrad.  My aunts did the same. They carefully stored their precious tubers with wax every winter.  Eventually the market was flooded with cheap imports from Eastern Europe and their way of life came to an end.  We moved to Canada shortly after.

I have always been artistic and the beauty of nature is a source of endless inspiration for me.  I pursued and completed a BFA and BEd to become an art teacher, which was my occupation for several years.  A few children later we were eager to move to a space that allowed us to follow our passions.  Now I have the privilege of bringing joy to others through our flowers.  I am still able to use my artistic training in designing beautiful bouquets for my flower subscribers.

My morning routine is described as "paradise" by those who visit me.  I work with wild bees and hummingbirds while I lovingly tend to the needs of the garden.  My children often join me.  I constantly meet people from all walks of life, who visit our farm for the sheer joy of bringing some beauty home or to their loved ones.  I am privileged to partake with my customers  in the joy of a birth, the solemnity of marriage, the sorrow of losing a loved one, and many other life events in between.

I am still passionate about teaching; I want to pass on my generational knowledge of dahlia growing so that you too can be successful in growing the queen of flowers!  Thank you for sharing my joy with me!

Robert's Story:

I've always enjoyed honey, but I had no aspirations to keep bees. It was May 2015, when my father-in-law arrived to our townhome backyard with an early birthday present. My first bee hive.

Slighlty perplexed at the thought of hosting honey bees bees in my 25' x 30' backyard, I stood back and observed the bees enter and exit the dark green painted hive dozens at a time. "So, what do I do with them?" I asked.

"It's easy, I'll show you", my father in law assured me.

That one hive has become over one hundred hives. The backyard hobby has become a sideline business. Now I spend my time breeding queens and selling hives, bottling honey and pollen, mentoring new beekeepers and sharing the joys of beekeeping with just about anyone who will listen.

There are few things in nature as awe inspiring as observing bees at work, standing in the midst of a swarm of bees, or enjoying fresh comb honey produced from the basswood blooms neighbouring my bee yard.

Several years ago, Anna caught the "dahlia bug" (as so many have before her) while browsing Instagram. Starting the flower farm and scaling it year after year (to make room for the endless new varieties) has been a great joy and challenge. The challenge is believing you're not crazy. The joy is seeing how the beautiful flowers we grow lift the spirits of so many.  Follow along at www.youtube.com/@abeeforallseasons
